Our Mission
To increase
knowledge and understanding of the marine
ecosystems, habitats, flora, fauna, and
socioeconomics of the Texas coast and Gulf of
Mexico through research and education.
Research
The Center for Coastal Studies (CCS)
staff and
students have
pursued a variety of areas of research since the
Center’s creation in 1984. Some of these areas
are: Coastal
ecology and management;
water quality;
ecotoxicology;
applied phycology;
coral reefs and
artificial reefs
Public Outreach & Education
The Center for Coastal Studies is involved in various public outreach and education projects and works in conjunction with several institutions/agencies to preserve and conserve our natural resources
through education by reaching out to the public through:
The Center for Coastal Studies also creates, publishes, and displays educational materials in the forms of:
- Educational Signs for parks, reserves, and rookery islands
- Brochures and pamphlets
- Websites
Additional public outreach and education activities include:
- Refugio County Earth Sciences Field Day for Elementary and Middle school students
- Participation in Earth Day
- Seminars/presentations at various elementary, intermediate, and high schools in the surrounding
area about marine science and conservation
